Our Cabin is Here!

We ordered our cabin about two months ago and can officially say it has been delivered. We were so excited to see it driving up our road last Friday. This week though, let me tell you, had me a bit stressed out.

First, we headed down to our property on Thursday because we thought the cabin would be here that evening. We got a call from the driver saying it wouldn’t be until about eight p.m. but we didn’t care the time. We told the driver that we had an appointment on Friday and didn’t want to reschedule. Also, we didn’t bring a tent this time, had our dogs with us, and didn’t care to spend money on a hotel. That was the last I heard and we went to the property and started clearing the spot.

My reception wasn’t the best but I was making a receiving calls so I felt confident, come eight o’clock, we would have our cabin. We waited…and waited…until ten. We knew they couldn’t deliver at night so we went to town and spent a hundred dollars on a hotel room. It had its perks, the shower being my favorite perk, but we didn’t need to be spending money like this right now. I set my alarm and tried to sleep.

When I woke in the morning I called the cabin company immediately. Miscommunication, he paid for my hotel room and assured me the cabin would be on my property by this afternoon. And he was right. Check out of first day with the cabin here:

Our Cabin and Property Tour

We had to leave for a couple days, so we locked everything up and headed home, but we didn’t stay away for long. We went back Tuesday, early in the morning and were shocked to see a note on the front door. It said something along the lines of, “Your building is on our property.  Call us or come talk to us, in the yellow house. -John and Barb”

Panic! I was shaking at this point. I’m trying to think who the closest portable building company was, since mine was six hours away. Maybe a tow company would be able to help, it was small enough. I didn’t know what I was going to do. So I went to the company that I bought the property from. We explained to them that when we bought the property we were told it was in one spot, but we were off, by about 40 feet too far too the south.

So, this week we had the cabin delivered over 250 miles, then moved another 200 feet.  Luckily we ended up in a very nice spot, with some very nice shade and some very nice neighbors. We couldn’t be happier, and are now even more excited to get everything finished so we can move in full-time!

    1. We looked into all the different options. This one will take some work getting the water done, but the electric is finished as soon as it is connected to the pole. Everything else seemed easy enough to do on our own so we jumped right in and the real work starts in a couple days. Tour of the inside coming this week, too. Thanks for your comment!

Your cabin looks lovely. Are your plans to live in it as a full-time dwelling?

  3. Love your blog! We too are starting the process of finding some land and a home to put on it. In all my research, the process of buying direct from a seller for land and purchasing a rent-to-own cabin such as yours, seems to be the best and easiest way to achieve that goal. I am eagerly anticipating the point where we can officially say we have our homestead! Congrats on yours! Can’t wait to see more of what you do.
